Free Upgrade to Windows 7/10

Systems sold within the first year of the release of Windows 7 had a Free Upgrade to Windows 7. These systems typically had a SMBIOS of 2.5 or 2.6. For these systems the OEM typically released a BIOS Update which updated the SLIC from 2.0 to 2.1 and this makes the system eligible for Windows 7 OEM System Locked Preinstallation. You can then install and activate Windows 7 64 Bit and generate a genuine ticket to activate a clean install of Windows 10 64 Bit. More details are about this are available Updating your BIOS in Windows Vista and Checking the SLIC Version. If the systems SLIC remains at 2.0 you can still install Windows 10 without a Product Key. This will leave your system unlicensed with it watermarked to the bottom right hand corner and you will be restricted when it comes to some settings but otherwise it is fully usable and more functional than Windows Vista. It will also be patched and be safer to use online. Note if clean installing Windows 10 on a Windows Vista System (SMBIOS 2.5 or 2.6) you may want to consider replacing the mechanical Hard Drive with a Solid State Drive as Hard Drives from over 10 years ago are a substantial bottle nech in terms of system performance.

This guide explained how to download media for the Retail Full License (which is the only license most other guides address) and it also explains how to download media for the Retail Upgrade Only License. Particular attention is paid towards the Dell OEM License and HP OEM License (which other guides poorly address).

The Windows Vista Setup Files could be downloaded directly from Digital River which could then be converted to a .iso and used to make installation media. The same procedure below may be carried out for the files of the different languages.

Unfortunately Service Pack 2 wasn’t integrated into these images. Its advised to download the Service Pack alongside all Windows Updates and patch your Windows Vista installation immediately offline after the reinstall. To do this see my other guide on using the WSUS Offline Update.

Note if you have lost your retail product key and your old installation could boot you can use Berlarc Advisor to find your product key.
