Microsoft has a bunch of news for developers: a simplified product lineup and pricing options for the next version of Visual Studio, Beta 2 of Visual Studio 2010 and .NET Framework 4, the official launch of both products scheduled for March 22, 2010, related benefits for MSDN subscribers, and improvements to the actual MSDN website. Redmond insisted on making all of these announcements on the same day, and while we think that will just lead to lots of confusion, we're still going to try to break it down for you as coherently as possible.

Nine SKUs to four

We had the opportunity to talk to Dave Mendlen, senior director of developer marketing at Microsoft, about today's announcement. Mendlen seemed most excited about the fact that Microsoft was cutting down the number of SKUs with the Visual Studio 2010 released. 'Today we effectively have nine SKUs on the market,' Mendlen told Ars. 'We've collapsed that to three core products.' Three core products? Mendlen emphasized that this naming scheme (Professional, Premium, and Ultimate) is purposefully similar to the Windows branding, and we agree with him that this is a good idea (though we're not particularly thrilled that Professional and Premium are out of order). He also told us that although the Visual Studio logo has never changed before, a new one is here now (pictured above) 'to symbolize all these changes.'

Beta 1 of Visual Studio 2010 and .NET Framework 4.0 arrived in May 2009. With Beta 2 out now, and the final slated for March 22, 2010, we asked Microsoft if there was any releases planned in between. 'We currently do not have another release scheduled, however customer feedback always determines final availability,' a Microsoft spokesperson told Ars. 'Microsoft will actively gather feedback from customers evaluating beta 2 and incorporating this feedback into our development efforts. We'll continue to provide updates on the development of Visual Studio 2010 and the .NET Framework 4 as we move towards final product availability.'

Visual Studio 2010 has new testing options, enhancements to the IDE, built-in tools for Windows 7 and Microsoft SharePoint 2010, new drag-and-drop bindings for Silverlight and Windows Presentation Foundation, and interoperability with various technologies (such as those for the database, ASP.NET model view controller, unified modeling language, Expression, and multicore).

On the other hand, .NET Framework 4.0 has an 81 percent reduction in the framework size when using the Client Profile, additional support for industry standards, inclusion of the Dynamic Language Runtime for more language choice, new support for high-performance middle-tier applications (including parallel programming, workflow, and service-oriented applications), and backward compatibility through side-by-side installation with version 3.5.

They will also get 750 free Azure hours per month (till about mid 2010) and 40 free Microsoft Learning hours. Once the deal is over, more hours will be laid out for the three core products. Finally, Microsoft is giving MSDN an overhaul, giving the user experience a refresh, and overall making the site faster. 'We've made some modifications to how the scripts work,' Mendlen indicated to Ars. Some of the improvements started trickling out over the weekend, including Visual Basic, Visual C#, Visual F#, Office Developer Center, SharePoint Developer Center, and Office Development with Visual Studio Developer Center.
